Change of Self

“Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene.”

~Arthur Christopher Benson

Have you ever found yourself saying, “I just want to get on a plane and leave!”

Perhaps, you have felt like stopping it all, buying a ticket, and escaping to some new dot on a map.

I understand!

Like legendary actress, Helen Hayes, once said:

“We live in a very tense society. We are pulled apart!”

Indeed, life can come at you with ferocity! A change of scenery seems like the best prescription for relief.

Has this been your feeling at some point, or another? It was mine, until I discovered that my most meaningful destination was not a place on a map ~ it is a place deep within.

This pensée came to me while sitting upon the roof of my home, in Spain. A favorite perch for meditative thought. It was early in the morning and the sun was dawning before my eyes. I looked out on the miracle that surrounded me: trees, flowers, birds, and an incredible light filling the new-day sky. I closed my eyes and felt this light warm my skin and enter my soul. I meditated on this feeling. The message that came to me was this: Your destination has never been a location on a map or a stamp on a passport. It is much closer than this! Your divine destination has always been a place of abundance waiting within. Go there. Don’t be afraid to go there.

Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene.

I opened my eyes on that morning and dedicated myself to a journey, one like no other. I desired to face the fear and travel within, meeting any obstacle in my way until I reached this place of abundance and purpose. I realized that nothing in my life would hold true and rich meaning unless I made my way along the road to self. I accepted the fact that wealth, success, happiness and purpose cannot come from exterior things. They are found of the spirit, no suitcase required!

Amazing, since that moment on the roof I have been guided to vast bounty, a balance of life that fulfills me, and a happiness for the smallest of things ~ for there is bigness in all things! I have nurtured this place within and it has lifted me up to new heights, guiding me to a life of endless possibility. I have looked at the woman in the mirror and I have learned to truly love her, like her, laugh with her, cry with her, support her, plan with her, and believe in her. I have become my own valued companion.

This, my friends, is the most beautiful gift you can give to YOU. Loving yourself is the key to unlocking all that you are meant to be.

If you ever feel that you have been conditioned to put yourself in last place, it’s time to break free. There is nothing wrong, or selfish, about taking time to uplift and love yourself. This is critical to understand. You cannot live a life of balance, fulfillment, and purpose if you do not know and love the person you see in the mirror.

You can transform your home, your wardrobe, your image ~ however, a change of self is the most fulfilling transformation you will ever realize.

A change of self will require of you to identify the baggage in your life. Ask yourself, “What is the pain of past that weighs me down? What are the hurts and disappointments that have become my fortress?” Then, you will need to forgive those who have caused this pain (even if it requires forgiving yourself). Forgiveness is crucial to freeing yourself from this baggage. You must release all of it. Take a walk, take a deep breath and let it go ~ up into the sky and toward the heavens. Give it to the one who knows your greatness. Trust in this power. And, then, celebrate! Celebrate your ability to heal. Delight in your will to go the distance and to live the fullest expression of your being.

Begin today! It’s never too late. No hurt is too big. No fortress has been built from which you cannot escape. Empower your life, today! Make a change of self. You know the directions, no map is needed! Just pack your big, beautiful spirit for the journey. Embrace every moment of your discovery!

Whenever you go, go with all your heart.

~Confucius

Your question “What is the pain of past that weighs me down?” struck a chord, as I think most of us don’t realize how much suffering from yesterday burdens our today and tomorrow. I appreciate your inward look at creating a more beautiful life.

I write about some of the more external issues of navigating an inspiring midlife at beautyinthemiddle.com but definitely resonate and appreciate your thoughtful message.

Beautiful, Michelle! As a self-proclaimed “runner” (though now it’s only a metaphor, I always find myself wanting to run, especially from problems. Change houses. Rearrange furniture. Change cities. Change states. And what’s left? Exhaustion! Great advice!

Thank you for this kind comment. Yes, “running” in life is a natural tendency. A change of scene seems like good medicine. A change of self is true medicine, though! Brings peace and renewal. Grateful for your feedback!
